A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER

Melanerpes aurifrons

Here is the forest of Morris Park, taken from the living room window. From this forest emerged the Red-Bellied Woodpecker to feed on our bird-feeder.

Sitting on the couch, the bird was spotted. The camera, kept on the coffee table was slowly lifted and poised for photography. At one point, the bird stopped eating and took notice. And then it kept eating.

  1. SPELL TO ATTRACT BIRDS TO OUR NEW BIRD FEEDER

    For Mansur Cornell

    Purple-blue gorgeousness blossoms,
    ruby red bell-ringing blossoms,
    clusters of opalescent petals burgeoning,
    black and white shadows alternating,
    clean branches well sustainable,

    don’t be shy birds!

    Bring friends, bring relatives
peck at our star seed sparkling,
    (stay awhile, linger longer,
O stay for a few seconds longer!),
    succulent seed so delicious,

come to our bird feeder you multicolored birds,
    feather crested, non-crested,
    bright-breasted, dull-breasted,
    long beaked, short beaked,
    color-streaked, colorless,

don’t be shy, be quick, be slow!

    Chirp your friends, chirp strangers,
    (safe from the twitching cats
    trapped inside the window),
    safe from harm, safely suspended,

    love is our laughter here,
    love is our birdsong,
Love the God Who feeds us all,

    love is our caterer.

  2. Wow, and bravo! I don’t think these guys venture down the street from yours to our house… We do see woodpeckers occasionally, smaller, eating at our suet cage, but not these exotic sultans! Keep that camera handy!
